The Australian Research Centre for Aerospace Automation has been made possible through the proud partnership between CSIRO, QUT and the Queensland State Government.

The Autonomous Systems theme of CSIRO's ICT Centre is headquartered at QCAT in Pullenvale and comprises 14 engineers, scientists and technicians at that site, as well as another 15 positions interstate. The QCAT-based group is focused on robotics, and has a strong track record in applications for the mining industry. With over $5M of industry funding the team has developed mapping systems, automated draglines, rope shovels, underground ore carriers and explosive loaders.

Other research activities include aerial and underwater robotic systems, as well as wireless environmental monitoring networks. The group works closely with QUT and UQ and co-supervises PhD students as well as employing summer vacation students.

The Queensland University of Technology's ARCAA group comprises 7 full-time academic staff and approximately 21 post-graduate research studentsand staff. The research group has an extensive international reputation in avionics research focussing in the areas of UAV autonomy, civil airspace integration and UAV emergency procedures.

The group was responsible, in conjunction with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, for the development and operation of the GPS payload for FedSat. The group comprises a number of avionics engineers who are also aero-modellers and private pilots providing a unique skill set. The group is actively involved with UAV research and development in conjunction with CASA, DITR and DSTO.
