Dr. Michael Brünig obtained his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Aachen University (RWTH Aachen) in 2001. During his time at university he worked full time as a research associate for the Institute for Communication Engineering where he was primary advisor for Master's theses, instructor for undergraduate level lab courses in digital signal processing and lecturer in a Master's level course "Introduction to Image Compression".

In 2001, Dr. Brünig joined Robert Bosch GmbH's corporate research in Hildesheim, Germany. His research focus was on algorithms for surround sensing systems in the automotive domain with application to driver assistance systems and autonomous driving. A second major focus of his work was establishing and maintaining collaborations with universities and other research organization in Germany and coordinating technology transfer.

By the end of 2001, Dr. Brünig transferred to the Bosch Research and Technology Center in Palo Alto, California. His research focus shifted to image analysis and coding and to real time 3D visualization. He was in involved in planning of new research activities, including setup of new university collaborations with Stanford University, e.g. 3D modeling.

Dr. Brünig stayed with the Bosch Research and Technology Center until March 2007. His last role was manger of a project program, including projects on Intelligent Security Systems, Assisted Living, Wireless Sensor Networks, Energy Efficient Building Automation, Software Middleware, and 3D Modeling. His research team was split over two locations: Palo Alto, CA and Pittsburgh, PA. In his role as program manager, Dr. Brünig was responsible for knowledge transfer from universities and research projects into product development. He was involved in strategic planning of research focus, long term goals, and technology scouting. In addition Dr. Brünig was responsible for monitoring research activities in the area of autonomous driving in the United States, especially the DARPA Grand Challenge.

Dr. Brünig is currently working in the ICT Centre at CSIRO, Australia. He is research director of the multi-disciplinary Autonomous Systems Laboratory with lab locations in Brisbane and Sydney. His work is targeted at delivering benefits to government, industry and society through innovative research.
