Smart Skies is a collaboration between Boeing Phantom Works (US), Boeing Australia, Airservices Australia and ARCAA (Australian Research Centre for Aerospace Automation).

This project will develop critical UAV flight safety systems and technologies, facilitating the growth of the UAV industry.  The technologies developed in this project will overcome one of the key remaining hurdles facing the UAV industry and will also have significant application to the entire future aviation industry.

The mission of the projects is

To demonstrate automated separation management technologies that facilitate greater utilisation of the National Airspace System (NAS) by manned and unmanned platforms through the integration of information and communications technologies.

Key technological areas of smart skies are

  • Develop and demonstrate a MATS that provides a local capability to assist in the safe operation of UAS in civilian airspace;
  • Onboard Sense-and-Act capabilities for UAVs and piloted aircraft at least equivalent to human pilot capabilities;
  • Investigation of new ICT (Information Communication Technology) based ATM architecture that complements existing  systems but also provides  automated separation management.

This is a 17 EFT program over three years.
